On the way to the Smart City of Wolfsburg

The megatrend of digitalisation is a chance and challenge in equal measure – for life, work, the economy, and society. In Wolfsburg, the City and Volkswagen AG have been shaping this process of change for the city hand in hand since 2016. The goal of the joint initiative #WolfsburgDigital is to develop the city into a model digital city. Residents and guests are finding out what “digitalisation” means through new offers. The aim is to increase their quality of life. Companies and science are contributing to that, and are finding a suitable environment for their digital projects here. Training positions and jobs of the future are attracting skilled workers and securing the city as a business location.

 

The initiators

City of Wolfsburg

The independent city is among the five largest cities in Lower Saxony. More than 125,000 residents live in an area of 204 square kilometres. It was founded in 1938 in conjunction with the development of the Volkswagen factory, who also had their head office there. With impressive speed, Wolfsburg transformed itself from an industrial city into an exciting centre for services, research and experiences, and is for this reason one of the most dynamic cities in Germany. Preparing Wolfsburg for the digital future is one of the central themes of the city development. The statement of intent, #WolfsburgDigital, has been considered as the guideline for the city’s digital strategy ever since the city council’s decision of February 2017.

 

Volkswagen AG

The Volkswagen brand is present in over 150 markets worldwide, and production is under way at more than 50 sites in 14 countries. Around 200,000 people are currently working for the Volkswagen Group’s core brand. The company is consistently advancing the development of automotive engineering. Electric mobility, digital transformation, and smart mobility are the core strategic themes of the future. At their head office in Wolfsburg, Volkswagen supports the #WolfsburgDigital initiative by developing digital services and new business areas as an example of mobility. Volkswagen’s IT City in particular signifies future-orientated, agile working principles.
